Jason Krugman Studio
Jeju Island Light Sculpture Park

Client: Jeju LAF
Completion: July 2018
Art Consultant: Every Global
Description: 20 unique permanent light sculptures

From May 2017 through July 2018, Jason Krugman Studio curated and made artworks for a new light sculpture park in Jeju Island, South Korea. Krugman Studio helped select 2 Brooklyn-based artists, Tom Fruin and Jen Lewin, and also created 20 permanent light sculptures of its own.

The site, a former green tea farm and museum overlooks the ocean, miles below. Sloping hillsides with rows of tea bushes are bathed in warm sun and humid, semi-tropical conditions for most of the year. Heavy rains come mid-summer and there is sometimes snow in the winter. Jeju is an island with a culture deeply rooted in the sea, as well as in its reverence to Hallasan, its central volcanic mountain. Woman divers, locally called "Haenyeo" (pronounced henya), free-dive in groups to retrieve a variety of beautiful mollusks that can be eaten at shoreline cafes.
